Camp Commander Patrick Samples will give a presentation on the Scotch-Irish of the Mountain South (Southern Appalachia), who formed the majority of the Confederate Army, in order to provide background on who they were and what they were fighting for.
His main references will be Leyburn's classic book and James Webb's Born Fighting.
Come hear Cmdr. Samples explain the influence of the Scottish Covenanters and some intriguing connections and ironies with New England Puritans and Tidewater Cavaliers, and find out about their surprising natural allies. Learn about the Anglo-Scottish Borders whose culture is essentially that of the Scotch-Irish. The themes of resistance to central authority, constant conflict, and unrepentant rebellion against oppresssors will be the the main subject.
